HVU Ubbelohde Viscometers
The Herzog HVU is an automatic Ubbelohde viscometer that uses standard Ubbelohde capillary tubes and a highly stable temperature control system. It is suitable for laboratories that require accurate test results in accordance with ASTM and ISO standards.
The instrument can test up to 2 samples at the same time using Ubbelohde capillary tubes. Users can select either a Near-Infrared (NIR) liquid level detection system or a Thermal NTC detection system based on the type of sample. These systems accurately detect liquid flow and measure flow time for viscosity calculation.
The HVU Series is available in 2 models:
HVU 481: Temperature range from 20 to 150°C. Suitable for viscosity testing of oils and lubricants at medium to high temperatures.
HVU 482: Temperature range from -40 to 100°C. Suitable for aviation fuels and other samples that require low-temperature testing.
The temperature control system provides stability of ±0.01°C. This helps samples reach temperature balance quickly and keeps the test conditions stable. The instrument also includes an automatic capillary cleaning system with Kalrez™ seals. These seals are resistant to strong solvents such as toluene and acetone.
A complete test cycle, including automatic cleaning, takes approximately 30–40 minutes.
Test results can be displayed on the instrument screen and sent to a printer or LIMS. Users can easily store, check, and review sample information, capillary tube information, test parameters, and previous test results.

Operating System
| Item | Details |
| Bath Temperature Stability | Bath temperature stability of ±0.01°C or ±0.02°F |
| Bath Temperature Control | Proportional heating control with high-speed bath liquid circulation. Uses jacketed capillary tubes and pressure-based sample stirring. |
| Sample Induction | Samples are filled using a syringe. The HVU 481 can be upgraded for use with a 48-position or 96-position automatic sample changer. |
| Meniscus Detection/Timing: Near-Infrared (NIR) | High-accuracy Near-Infrared liquid level detection and timing system. Suitable for clean samples, black samples, samples containing water, and samples with electrical conductivity. |
| Meniscus Detection/Timing: Thermal NTC | Suitable for samples with low to high viscosity, including cloudy or opaque samples. |
| Auto Cleaning | The automatic cleaning system supports up to 2 solvents. Users can set the number of cleaning cycles. The system uses a minimum of 40 mL of solvent. Solvent is filled and drained by gravity without an external vacuum pump. The system also checks whether enough solvent is available for cleaning. Kalrez™ seals support many types of solvents, including acetone. Viton seals are not used. |
| Diagnostics & Calibration | Displays and controls the mechanical and electrical system status in real time. The system can be accessed directly from the instrument or through an optional computer network. |
Basic System Requirements
| Item | Details |
| Electrical | 230 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 1,200 W. A 110 VAC power supply can be used with a transformer. |
| Cooling Water | Standard tap water can be used for tests at temperatures from 25 to 60°C. An external circulation cooler is required for tests at temperatures as low as -40°C. |
| Solvents | Uses an external solvent supply and supports up to 2 types of solvents. |
