Multirange Viscometer – Herzog HVM 472
The Herzog HVM 472, or Automated Multi-Range Capillary Viscometer, is designed to measure the kinematic viscosity of both transparent and opaque liquid samples. It is suitable for lubricating oils, fuel oils, and dark petroleum products. The instrument is designed for laboratories that need to test a large number of samples.
The instrument is equipped with two temperature-controlled baths and Multi-Range capillary tubes, allowing two samples to be tested at the same time. Each bath can be controlled independently, making it suitable for laboratories that need to measure viscosity at different standard temperatures, such as 40°C and 100°C. These results can be used to calculate the Viscosity Index accurately.
The system can hold up to 52 samples using two autosamplers, with 26 positions per autosampler. Two samples can be measured at the same time.
The automatic capillary cleaning system cleans and prepares the system for the next sample. It supports two cleaning solvents as standard and can be upgraded to four solvents with optional accessories. The system is designed for easy and safe operation.

| Bath temperature range | 20–150°C, adjustable by the user |
| Temperature stability | Below 100°C: better than ±0.01°CAbove 100°C: better than ±0.03°C |
| Temperature control resolution | 0.001°C, with high-speed liquid circulation inside the bath to keep the temperature even |
| Sample loading system | Automatic sample loading system with 26 positions per bath, one autosampler for each bath, for a total of two autosamplers |
| Sample intake | Samples are automatically drawn from 18 mL or 4 mL sample containers |
| Sample setup | When a sample is placed in the instrument, the setup window opens automatically. The user can enter the sample number and start the test |
| Detection system | Two Multi-Range capillary tubes with Thermal NTC sensors for meniscus detection and sample flow-time measurement |
| Data display and output | Results are shown as numerical values. Data can be sent to a printer through a Parallel Centronics port and transferred to a LIMS or HLIS system through a standard serial port |
| Automatic cleaning system | Uses two cleaning solvents. The cleaning cycle and cleaning steps can be set by the user |
| Solvent use | Uses a low amount of solvent and does not require an external vacuum pump |
| Solvent monitoring | Automatically checks whether enough cleaning solvent is available |
| Seal material | Uses Kalrez seals, which are compatible with many solvents, including acetone |
| Optional cleaning system | An optional four-solvent cleaning system is available |
| Inspection and calibration | Shows the status of the mechanical and electrical systems in real time. The systems can be controlled from the instrument or through an optional network connection |
| Power supply | 100, 115, or 230 VAC, 50–60 Hz. The correct power supply can be selected to match the installation site |
| Instrument dimensions | Width 49 × Depth 75 × Height 127 cm |
| Weight | 90 kg / 99 kg when the baths are filled with liquid |
| Dimensions in inches | Width 19.3 × Depth 29.6 × Height 50 inches |
